SALINA

The island of Salina takes its name from a  basin of brakish water that is situated on the island.  Once upon a time, from this basin were produced the salt that used to be traded in part of the Mediterranean sea . this precious and expensive element, for a long time was subject of the black market traffic. It has been told to smuggle the salt from place to place, they used to transport it in cartridge belts, hidden under the petty coats of the women.

In ancient times,, the island of Salina was named “Didyme”, that in greek it means “Twins”. Infact on the island there are two craters that are exactly the same. Between these craters we have the valley “Val di Chiesa”, where  Malvasia is produced.

Malvasia is a wine having aphrodisiac flavors, very sweet, that is produced by a long drying process  of the his grapes, it is made so to concentrate the sugary part of the must and therefore  rising the alcoholic degree.

The intense taste of this wine, almost divine,  takes back to the famous nectar of the Gods: the Ambrosia.
